Entangled Arctic fox
2025, glazed ceramic and fishing net, 14x25x4 inches
Plastic debris like fishing nets end up in even the most remote places, including the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. These plastic nets don’t only entangle fish and marine mammals, they also affect terrestrial mammals including reindeer and foxes, like this one I saw photographed in the Arctic Council’s publication “Effects of Plastic Pollution on Arctic Animals.” Plastic pollution is a never-ending, global problem affecting every ecosystem and every level of the food chain. Plastic pollution has even been found in the deepest part of the ocean and in remote, uninhabited polar regions. The industries that create this pollution must be held accountable, the debris must be cleaned up, and new, pollution-free ways of co-existing with wildlife must be our goal for the future.
