Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) were once hunted to near extinction in the waters surrounding Svalbard. While hunting restrictions have led to some recovery, evidence of the industry persist in the many, many skeletal remains of walruses on the shores of Svalbard. Some now growing Arctic wildflowers.
