Skull of the ice bear at Lady Franklinfjorden

2025, Glazed ceramic, 15x8x7 inches

On October 9, 2024, I woke up in Nordaustlandet, the farthest north and east we would sail during the Arctic Circle's 2024 Autumn expedition in Svalbard. After a hike to the top of ridge overlooking the Nordre Franklinbreen glacier, we descended to the glacier's edge, where it meets the water of Lady Franklinfjorden. Half buried in snow, at the base of a towering blue spire of ice, we found the skull of an adult polar bear. Holding in my hands the remnants of a large ice bear, as it is called in Norwegian (isbjørn), inspired this ceramic sculpture.
