Svalbard puffin and the last sand eel
2024, Glazed ceramic, 20x15x5 inches
Svalbard puffins (Fratercula arctica naumanni) spend the fall and winter alone at sea, diving for small fish (like sand eels, Ammodytes tobianus), zooplankton, and crabs. In the spring they return to reproduce on the rocky coasts where they live in clifftop colonies.
Climate change is affecting sea birds’ ability to find food. Many instead find plastic. Here is a puffin with its last sand eel meal.
