Molting Arctic Fox with Purple Mountain Stone-breaker

2024, Glazed ceramic, 6x4x3 inches

To stay warm the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) wraps its fluffy white tail tightly around its body, minimizing surface area to maximize heat retention. Its super insulated fur is so effective the fox doesn’t shiver until temps hit *negative* 94°F. In the warmer months, some Arctic foxes molt, losing patches of their white winter fur to better camouflage with the surrounding summer tundra. In this piece, the fox's dark patches mimic the sprouting tundra, with plants including Purple Mountain Saxifrage (meaning stone-breaker) (Saxifraga oppositifolia), an Arctic wildflower.
